Born on June 19, 1974 in the village Komsomolsky Chamzinsky district of the Mordovian ASSR.

Father – Chashin Nikolai Petrovich, born in 1950. Mother – Volgina Irina Sergeevna, born in 1948 (in 1993 she was tonsured a nun with the name Varvara, from 1995 to the present time the abbess of the Nativity of the Mother of God South-Ussuri convent of the Vladivostok diocese).

Brother – Archbishop of Salekhard and New-Urengoy Nikolay. Sister – nun Olimpiada (Chashina Elena Nikolaevna), born in 1981, nun of the Pokrovsky Khotkov Monastery.

In 1991 graduated from the secondary school of the village Narovchat, Penza region.

On March 16, 1993, by Bishop of Vladivostok and Primorsky Benjamin was tonsured a monk with the name Sergiy in honor of St. Sergiy of Radonezh.

On April 7, 1993, was ordained a deacon by the same bishop, and on February 17, 1996, a presbyter.

From August 9, 1993 – Secretary of the Vladivostok Diocesan Administration. Since September 1, 1995 – Vice-Rector of the Theological School of the Vladivostok Diocese. In 2000, was elevated to the rank of hegumen.

Since April 2, 1997 – Rector of the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Vladivostok.

In 2005 was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of December 26, 2006 (journal No. 147), was elected Bishop of Ussuri, Vicar of the Vladivostok Diocese.

Was named bishop on February 14, 2007 at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow. Ordained on February 15 at the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Divine services were led by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of October 12, 2007 (Journal No. 99) and of December 26, 2012 (Journal No. 137), was entrusted archpastoral care for the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Singapore and Malaysia.

 By the decision of the Holy Synod of March 31, 2009 (journal No. 23) was appointed Bishop of Solnechnogorsk, Vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

By order of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia dated April 1, 2009, was appointed head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchate. Also, by decree of His Holiness the Patriarch, was appointed dean of the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Ostankino, Moscow.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of May 27, 2009 (journal No. 43) was appointed a member of the Award Commission under the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

In 2011-2019 Member of the Supreme Church Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of October 21, 2016 (Journal No. 99), was appointed Administrator of the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, the DPRK, the Republic of Korea, while retaining his position as head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On November 20, 2016, at the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of December 28, 2018 (Journal No. 106), was appointed Head of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia with the title of “Singapore and South-East Asia” and temporarily retaining the post of head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On January 7, 2019, during the vigil service at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of February 26, 2019 (Journal No. 8), was appointed the ruling bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Singapore with the assignment of temporary administration of the Korean, Thai and Philippine-Vietnamese dioceses.

In February-April 2019, temporarily administrated the Korean Diocese, in February-August 2019 – the Philippine-Vietnamese.

By order of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill dated July 23, 2019, he was relieved of the post of head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchate with an expression of gratitude for the conscientious and efficient performance of his official duties.
